Renato Viscusi said he was drawn to the career because he liked to be with people and liked owning his own business.
The brothers began cutting hair together in 1969 at Bernie’s Barber Shop located in the General Electric Subway near Broadway in Schenectady. The two owned the shop there for 35 years.
Then, Renato moved to 318 Mariaville Road in 2000.
“It used to be a house and we put an extension on,” Renato Viscusi said.
Ziggy Viscusi got into the business following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. He had been working for an airline company when terrorists hijacked planes that fall morning and crashed them into the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in rural Pennsylvania. After that, he decided it was time for a change.
Now, Ziggy oversees the barbershop and continues to work alongside other family members, including his brother-in-law Michael Komazenski, who is there when he’s not on the job as a Schenectady firefighter, and his nephew Nicholas Melillo, who cuts hair when he’s not working as a Schenectady police officer.
Ziggy Viscusi said it’s a perfect job because he gets to work alongside family.
His father agrees, even with all the changes over the years.
Renato Viscusi said, back in 1969, a haircut was $2.50, now he charges about $25. It also used to be that men would get a shave and a cut, now it’s pretty much just a cut.
“At one point in the 70s — when hair was long — a lot of people left the barber business, but I stayed in part time,” he said. “I worked in GE. I worked as a bus driver for 20 years and I kept the barbershop”.
He went fulltime in 2001, alongside his son.
Renato said the best part is waking up and opening the shop at 7:30 a.m. and getting to be there and talking to customers — some of whom he’s had for decades.
Renato Viscusi said his other favorite part is being able to give people a good haircut, something he’s mastered over the years.
“Not one haircut is the same,” he said.
He said you have to understand what a person looks like and what haircut would go best for them.
Renato Viscusi said his hope is the business keeps going and growing, remaining successful for years to come.
“The goal is to keep it going as a family tradition,” he said.

“Non un taglio di capelli è uguale”, ha detto.
