Ukrainian youth in dialogue with Pope Francis: “He reassured us that we have not been forgotten”

“The meeting between Pope Francis and the young Ukrainians has been extremely important, a historic event, also because the Pope’s initiative to engage in dialogue with the young came as a surprise,” Father Roman Demush, deputy director for youth ministry in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, comments on the experience of the young people in Kyiv who participated in the online ‘conversation’ with Pope Francis on Saturday, February 1. It was an hour-long dialogue. The Pope was video-connected from Casa Santa Marta to the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, where young Ukrainians from the eparchies of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the dioceses of the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo had gathered.” The online meeting was also attended, via social media, by young adults who, like the rest of their families, had emigrated from their respective cities of Warsaw (Poland), London (UK), Chicago (USA) and Munich (Germany). His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas, Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine, Bishop Jan Sabilo, auxiliary bishop of the Latin Diocese of Kharkiv-Zaporizhzhya, and the heads of the Youth Commissions also participated online. “The Pope was not “only” addressing the young people,” observed Father Demush. “Primarily, the Pope wished to listen to them, and the young people had the opportunity to give testimony about the truth of the war and the reality in which they live. The opportunity to communicate directly with the Pope has reassured them that they are not alone, that they have not been abandoned, and that they have not been forgotten. They conveyed their profound gratitude to Pope Francis, requesting that he continue to be the voice of the Ukrainian people, as he has been to date.”

During the meeting, the Holy Father held in his hands a copy of the New Testament and the Book of Psalms, which had belonged to Oleksandr, a young Ukrainian soldier killed in Avdiivka. ‘“For me, this is a relic from you, Ukrainians, from this young man who gave his life for his homeland”, the Pope said. He then held up the rosary the soldier had used to pray: “For me, this is a relic of a young man who gave his life for peace. I keep it on my desk and I pray with it every day.”

Sofia, 17, was also present at the online meeting with Pope Francis.

“While he was speaking, the Pope was holding a copy of the Gospel that had belonged to a young Ukrainian. This touched me deeply,” she told SIR. “The Pope also showed us his rosary, which he described as a relic. He told us that he keeps this rosary on his desk and prays it every day.

“This shows that Pope Francis has not forgotten us, he remembers us every day. I was very touched by this.”

“The Pope then told us that our patriotism is to love, pray and fight for our country,” Sofia continues. “We also had the opportunity to ask the Pope questions and seek his guidance on issues we were struggling with: How can we love our enemies? How can we forgive them? Where do we find the strength to start again, to rebuild our lives when they have been destroyed? We asked these questions so as not to lose faith in this time of war.”

War is always extremely painful”, says 20-year-old Victoria, 20. “All of us are living the war in the first person, with deep sorrow. The meeting left the young people feeling inspired. We represent not only the present of our people, but also the future of our country. It is important for us to be present and to be patriots for our people who love their country, as the Pope has asked us to do. We must do everything in our power to ensure that this commitment flourishes and bears fruit.”
